Salvation Army extends Angel Tree Program deadline, 400 angels left to be 'adopted'

Organizers for the Salvation Army's Angel Tree Program are asking for help because, though the original deadline has passed, there are still hundreds of angels who need Christmas gifts.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Organizers for the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program are asking for help because, though the original deadline has passed, there are still hundreds of angels who need Christmas gifts.

The Salvation Army said there are 400 angels that still need to be adopted, otherwise, they won’t receive a Christmas gift. Staff divided all the children into categories to make it easier for people to decide who they’re able to shop for.

The Angel information is broken down into categories.

“Child’s age and gender and then it has all of their clothing sizes,” Salvation Army Captain Jamie Spalding said.

Under "child need," you’ll find the most important thing the parents know they need like socks or coat and under "gift wish" children can list things they want most. Many list "educational" items. You can find children’s books and games at local spots, like Toggery or The Museum of Discovery.

If you’re on a budget go straight for the clearance section.

“Everything is on sale, almost as good of deals as you can find on Black Friday as we’re getting closer to Christmas,” Spalding said.

The Salvation Army captains spent their day shopping for angels with donated funds.

“Sometimes even if you mention that you’re shopping for the Angel Tree program some employees may help you find some deals further so be sure to mention that,” Spalding said.

They recommend looking for sales at children’s stores.

“We just went to Claire’s and got to spend about $150 dollars. They were having a sale, so we doubled our money and it was great fun,” Spalding said.

Children’s clothing at Target and Carters was listed for 50 to 70 percent off. Another shopper found gifts for a 3-year-old angel at Marshals and HomeGoods.

“I found more toys at Home Goods,” Bianca Martinez said.

She said, in the end, all you need is a big heart.

“When I was smaller my mom used to get us from here, so I remembered, and I was like, maybe it’s time for me to give back,” Bianca Martinez said.

The Salvation Army has extended the deadline to shop for an angel to Dec.16. A few locations you can pick up angel cards are the Park Plaza Mall, McCain Mall and the Target on Chenal Parkway.
