Stuttgart Police Dept. fundraising for new uniforms, hoping to have them by next year

The Stuttgart Police Department is working to get new uniforms but struggling to find the money to cover the expenses.

Officers at the Stuttgart Police Department said the uniforms they’re currently wearing can be intimidating. They said the new uniforms won’t just make them look better, but will also make them look more approachable.

“The new uniforms I think make us look less intimidating, more approachable to the general public,” said  Stuttgart Police Officer, Christopher Stockard.

Officer Stockard is the first patrolman to get one of the new uniforms but said the idea has been in the works for a while.

“We’ve talked about it for a while and finally everything is coming together to where we are able to get the new uniforms,” said Officer Stockard.

Aside from making officers look more approachable, Stuttgart Police Chief Mark Duke said he wants his officers to feel good.

“Look good, feel good, look professional, protect and serve,” said Chief Duke.

Patrolman Bradley Wilson said the new gear will also bring a sense of confidence to the entire city.

“People go to other towns and they see other departments with uniforms that look professional and ask why doesn’t our police department look like that?” said Officer Wilson.

Finding the money to buy gear for 23 officers isn’t easy. It would cost about $30,000. That’s money that the department said it doesn’t have to spare right now.

“With the new vests, which is the biggest expense, it’s right at $1,700 per officer,” said Chief Duke.

That’s why Chief Duke said he is looking for ways to raise the money needed.

“There’s a few grants available through different organizations,” said Chief Duke. “A men’s group has offered to do a cookout just to help us raise this money and offset.”

The department is also hoping to throw a block party to collect donations from the community.

“Pull a big grill around here, we’ll do hot dogs and people set up games and just have a big community event and if they want to donate then great, if they don’t it’s a good way to meet the officers,” said Chief Duke.

Chief Duke said he hopes to have all the new gear within the next year. They’ll buy uniforms as they collect the money and transition slowly.
