North Little Rock teen organizes march against racial injustice

“This isn’t about politics, this isn’t about pushing x, y, and z legislation. It’s about unifying the community,” Teague said.

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — At 18 years old, North Little Rock High grad Dawson Teague decided to take a stand against racism.

“I organized it, but it definitely could not be accomplished without the help of so many people,” Teague said.

Teague created the event called North Little Rock Unified Against Racism and Injustice.

“I felt convicted, I felt like I was just silent on the issue for so long and I felt like just being ignorant towards issues of race didn’t help anything,” Teague said.

The demonstration and march involved community members, ministries, school leaders, and the North Little Rock Police Department.

“I didn’t see a lot from North Little Rock and so I decided to put something together that would allow myself and others in the community to be able to participate,” Teague said.

The crowd started at Another Chance Ministries Church, then walked here to the North Little Rock Police station.

Delila Loving is a part of an interracial family and said teaching antiracism is important for our future.

“It makes me apprehensive, but it makes me hopeful that we’re out here to see everyone working together that we can hopefully have the same dream that Martin Luther King had,” Loving said.

In this case, the future is leading the way.

“So many people in older generations are looking to young people for answers and I think that all of that support just really helps,” Teague said.

Teague wanted people to walk away with a better understanding of injustice.

“This isn’t about politics, this isn’t about pushing x, y, and z legislation.  It’s about unifying the community,” Teague said.
