This Vilonia school bus driver is retiring after 26 years without missing a day

Jackie Lawrence is hanging up his keys after 26 years as a school bus driver in Vilonia.

When's the last time you took off from work or called in?

Most people have one or several days in mind, unless you’re Jackie Lawrence.

He’s a Vilonia School District Bus Driver with 26 years of perfect attendance.

The background on how Lawrence got started driving nearly three decades ago is short and sweet, his former baseball coach told him about the job and he's been driving ever since.

“In 1991, I needed employment,” said Lawrence while reminiscing back over his life.

He’ll crank up bus number 37 for the very last time Thursday.

He grew up in Vilonia, Arkansas and completed his early years of education at the alma matter he's had the pleasure of working for.

“You know the Bible says, 'If you would have a friend, you must show yourself to be friendly.' I try to be friendly and I've made a lot of friends over the years,” he added.

Twenty-six years with no days off! That’s a success most only dream of or not at all.

The driver credits his dedication not to anything personal, but fulfillment he gets from serving others.

"I think it's an awesome accomplishment. Jackie is to be commended for the service he's provided the district,” said Vilonia School District Assistant Superintendent, Kathy Riggins.

Working for the district runs deep in Lawrence's family. He and Riggins are cousins.

He said he hopes to be known and remembered as “somebody who loved to give to others."

"My dad taught me that. He died last year, he was giving person," he said.

He can't wait to enjoy retirement, but will continue giving back to his community.

“Bus drivers are one of the most parts of our system. They help serve our kids, they're the first ones to see kids in the morning and last ones to see them in the afternoon,” Riggins said.

Lawrence has one message for those who watch and read his story.

No matter what you do for a living there’s always going to be challenges, so enjoy the journey.

“You got to put up with the bitter to get the sweet, that's a simple way to put it. I’ve always remembered that. I hope my dad's proud of me,” said Lawrence.

To its knowledge, the district has never had anyone set this kind of record.
