AUGUSTA, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas State Police says it's investigating the death of a man who became unresponsive after police in Augusta pepper sprayed him.

Local authorities requested the state investigation after 38-year-old Quinton Laird died early Thursday.

Authorities say local police were called to an Augusta home around 3 a.m. when a resident reported a prowler and said Laird later kicked a door open and went to bed. Authorities say Laird was removed from the house but officers used pepper spray when he began to resist handcuffs.

Police say Laird became unresponsive and officers attempted life-saving measures. He was pronounced dead at a Searcy hospital.

The state crime lab will determine the manner and cause of death and state police will present the results of the investigation to the Woodruff County prosecutor.
