76 years later, Pearl Harbor veteran’s remains returned to Arkansas

Seventy six years after World War II, U.S. Navy seaman's remains are being returned to his home state, Arkansas.

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (KTHV) - U.S. Navy Seaman First Class Glenn Tipton, an Arkansan who was killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II, will be honored at a memorial service this Friday.

Tipton was on the USS Oklahoma when it capsized during the infamous attack. The remains of many on the ship were anonymous until DNA technology recently identified several individuals', including Tipton's.

A native of Randolph County, Tipton enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1940. He advanced to Seaman First Class by the time of his death.

After 76 years, Tipton returned to Arkansas today as the 189th Airlift Wing of the Arkansas Air National Guard returned his remains for the 74th anniversary of D-Day.

A visitation will take place at the Wings of Honor WWII Museum Thursday, June 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. Photos, artifacts and medals from his family will be on display, and the public is invited to pay their respects and meet the family.

On Friday, June 8, a formal memorial service will take place at the museum at 10 a.m., which will be open to the public as well. Afterward, he will be laid to rest at the Opposition Cemetery near Ravenden, next to his mother. The Lawrence County Chamber will have yellow ribbons displayed along the route to the cemetery.
