Steiner Ranch a year after the fire

AUSTIN -- A fire in Steiner Ranch destroyed nearly two dozen homes last year. But firefighters were able to save hundreds from burning.

Labor Day weekend of 2011 was one the people of Steiner Ranch will always remember. Twenty-three homes were destroyed, and dozens more were damaged. More than 160 acres burned in the wildfire.

Residents in one neighborhood were evacuated for a couple of days while firefighters got a handle on the flames. A year later homes are being rebuilt, and the residents of Steiner Ranch are moving forward.

There are still things to remind residents of the fires. Acres of trees are still burned. Those living there tell KVUE they have learned valuable lessons they hope everyone can learn from.

The best thing to do is keep the brush down. It really feels like Steiner Ranch is coming back to life, although it never stopped living. [It's] just getting back to normal, resident Mike Stevens said.

Lake TravisFire and Rescue battled the fire last summer, and will host an open house Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the department's station.Staff will talk about lessons learned from the fire and the progress made in disaster preparedness.
