STATESBORO, Ga. — The Arkansas State baseball team dropped two contests to Georgia Southern Saturday evening at Jack Stallings Field. The Red Wolves fell 10-6 in the first contest and 17-6 in the second.
Following the loss, A-State dropped to 25-25 overall and 11-15 in the Sun Belt Conference while Georgia Southern improved to 29-21 overall and 15-11 in the league.
Zach Jackson pitched 4.0 innings where he allowed three runs on seven hits with one walk and a strikeout.Chandler Coates (4-5) seen action out of the bullpen, pitching four innings allowing seven runs on nine hits while recording two punchouts.
In game one, the Eagles built an 2-0 advantage in the first, but the Red Wolves rallied in the second tacking on a four spot. Jaylon Deshazier ignited the A-State offense when he sliced a single down the left field line to bring across Justin Felix. Jacob Jablonski followed with a double down the left field line while Eli Davis added to the Red Wolves advantage 4-2, after ripping a two-out two-run double to right field.
Georgia Southern evened things up in the seventh, at six runs apiece, then took the lead over the Red Wolves after a solo shot to left followed by a two-run home run to left center. The Eagles added insurance in the eighth, when Mason McWhorther slashed a two-run double to left center.
McWhorther finished the first game of the double header three-for-four with two RBIs, two runs and a walk while Austin Thompson finished two-for-four with three RBIs, two runs and a home run. Eight of the nine members in the Georgia Southern lineup recorded hits while six of nine registered multiple hits.
Nate Alberius (5-4) begin things on the mound for the Red Wolves, in game two, where he pitched three innings, allowing five runs on six hits with one strikeout. Noah Stone relieved Alberius, pitching 1.1 inning allowing seven runs on six hits and two walks.
The Red Wolves rallied in the ninth inning when Karsen Reid singled through left field and Andrew Leggo sent a two-run bomb to right center to pull within 17-6of Georgia Southern, but it wasn’t enough as the Eagles took game two of the double heard 17-6.
Arkansas State will return to action Saturday, May 12 when it wraps up its series against Georgia Southern. The first pitch is set for 10 a.m. (ET) at Jack Stallings Field.
