LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - UPDATE: All playoff and championship games scheduled for Nov. 30 are postponed, according to a tweet by the Arkansas Activities Association.
All 2A, 3A and 4A semifinal games will be played at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1. The 5A championship between Little Rock Christian and Pulaski Academy is now set for 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2.
ORIGINAL: A risk of severe weather on Friday evening comes as thousands plan to descend on War Memorial Stadium for the 5A state football championship between Pulaski Academy and Little Rock Christian Academy.
The Arkansas Activities Association tells THV11 the game scheduled for 7 p.m. is on as planned. Stadium officials expect an estimated 15,000 people to attend.
“This is one of the biggest events [of the year] because it's two days and it is tens of thousands of people,” Arkansas State Park spokesperson Meg Matthews said.
With safety, a top concern for stadium officials, according to Matthews, a National Weather Service meteorologist will be on-site during the game to monitor weather conditions.
“We'll have the National Weather Service here,” Matthews said. “They'll be on-hand. We'll have experts who will give us expert advice, so everybody can feel safe."
The Arkansas Activities Association will follow its standard lightning guidelines during the game. If lightning is detected within 10 miles of War Memorial, the game will be suspended and attendees will be told to take cover until 30 minutes after the last strike.
It will take more than rain to postpone the game, but Matthews says it's best to be prepared.
“One different thing about this game is that you are allowed to bring an umbrella, which was not allowed at the Razorback game,” she said. “So if rain is expected, go ahead and bring an umbrella. I also recommend bringing a poncho. You want to stay dry.”
