What to know about Hurricane Ian as it makes landfall in Florida

Hurricane Ian has officially made landfall along the west coast of Florida, near Cayo Costa, Florida at 3:05 p.m. (EST) on Wednesday, Sept. 28.

FLORIDA, USA — Hurricane Ian has officially made landfall along the west coast of Florida, near Cayo Costa, Florida at 3:05 p.m. (EST) on Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Official landfall information:

  • Category 4
  • Max Sustained Wind Speeds: 150 mph

Roughly half a million households (and climbing) are without power in western and southern Florida as high winds and storm surges knock out power infrastructure.

There is a lot of water with this storm as it not only drops 10-20+ inches of rain across the Sunshine State, especially from Fort Myers to Tampa to Orlando, but also pushes in several feet of seawater.

Storm surge north of Fort Myers near Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda is estimated to top above sea level at 15 to 18 feet. That's roughly the height of a two-story building.

The storm should quickly weaken its winds as it pushes over land, while still dropping flooding rains across most of central Florida.

The remnants of the storm will likely push north and bring rain to parts of Georgia and the Carolinas.
