On March 1, 1997, one of the deadliest tornado outbreaks in recent history hit Arkansas. Those sixteen tornadoes, three of which were EF-4, killed 25 people.
Most of the damage and deaths happened in Arkadelphia and the Southwest Little Rock area.
According to the National Weather Service, no weather event since has resulted in that many fatalities.
Typically, tornado damage paths are only a few miles long, but some of these tracks were 50 to 75 miles long. Though most were considered weak, they caused considerable damage.
At least 1,200 structures were damaged or destroyed, costing $115 million in repairs.
