Community of East End steps up and bands together to clean up tornado damage

The community of East End saw a tornado with winds of upwards from 111 to 135MPH on Friday night. Now they're coming together to clean up the damage.

SALINE COUNTY, Ark. — On Friday evening, thousands of people all across the state of Arkansas experienced severe bad weather.

Saline County was one of the areas that were impacted, as a tornado tore through the area.

People in the East End community were left to spend most of the next day sorting through the debris and cleaning up.

"It's the most devastating thing I've seen around here in a long time," Larry Cossey, whose home was affected, said.

Near Sardis Road, it was easy to see the intensity of the storm.

The roof was blown off one home and a large trail of debris was left behind.

"I was listening to the weather in the fraidy hole [and] had no idea it was near this bad until we come out," Cossey said.

He explained that his storm shelter is a couple of miles from his property and that when he returned home, the scattered metal and tree limbs were hard to digest.

"I automatically assumed it was my house, laying in the middle of the road and in the front yard," Cossey described.

He also said the storm approached so quickly, that he was forced to leave his dogs behind when he and his wife headed to the shelter.

Utility crews and the people who live in East End have all been working very hard to pick up what was blown away in every direction.

"You can see the 2017 Nissan held up pretty good for that big of a tree," Cossey said.

Remnants of Cossey's neighborhood's shed are spread out on a field across the street, and other homes in the area were also heavily damaged.

After a chaotic night, Cossey explained how his community really stepped up.

"Them neighbors were out in their t-shirts and their shorts [and] barely had shoes on," Cossey said.

Now, as he continues working to clear the damage and move forward, he can't help but think how things could've been much worse.

"We're blessed. I'm telling you very blessed," Cossey said.
