Are you recycling right?

Executive Director for Regional Recycling & Waste Reduction District, Craig Douglass, said, sadly, a third of the recyclables they see are contaminated.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Pulaski County is seeing a 13 percent increase from last year in the amount of people recycling.

Executive Director for Regional Recycling & Waste Reduction District, Craig Douglass, said, sadly, a third of the recyclables they see are contaminated.

“People throughout the county are increasing their participation in recycling because they understand the benefits, for the local community, economic environment and environmental protection. When it comes to recycling there's some do's and don’ts you need to know,” he said.

Douglass said plastic bags cannot be put into the bin for any reason.

“People are taking good recyclable material and putting it in plastic bags before they put it in the cart, everything should go in the cart loose,” he said.

He said you should also keep anything out that could spoil or rot.

“As far a pizza boxes are concerned, you can use some of the pizza box but you can't use what has cheese or sauce on it and if you have cans, be sure to rinse them out,” he said.

If you're having trouble deciding what to put in your recycle bin, remember this:

“You don't have to sort it, we'll do that for you. However, in order for us to do that effectively we've got to make sure the right stuff is in the cart and the wrong stiff is left out, when in doubt, leave it out,” he said.

Here's a link to the do’s and don’ts of recycling.
