Elementary school in Redfield proves to be a ‘Renaissance man’

Craig O'Neill takes us on his Reading Roadtrip to a school in Redfield.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - The big yearly test for kindergarteners, first and second graders is called the Renaissance Test.

This is the week those tests are being administered.

On Monday, at Hardin Elementary School in Redfield, it was the reading or literacy section. This group should have no trouble.

In the room where Craig O’Neill read to the 100 plus kids, there is a big poster proclaiming a new milestone for the school. These kids have read or absorbed over 31 million words so far this year.

More and more research is pointing up how important vocabulary is in developing students. The more a child is exposed to a speech from parents, not just commands to reading in and out of school as well as other cultural offerings, the better their chance of reading at grade level by grade three.

It’s why Craig’s speaking [even though it does border on standup comedy] is so important before the actual reading begins. With over 30 million words read by these kids, look for Redfield kids to score well.
