Family-owned farm offers rare apples in Northwest Arkansas

Although the land has been in the Vanzant family for over 150 years, Fred and Kahylene Vanzant officially opened the farm nearly 75 years ago.

LOWELL, Ark. — Vanzant Fruit Farm and Market on Highway 264 in Lowell has been serving Northwest Arkansas with their locally-grown produce since 1949.

Although the land has been in the Vanzant family for over 150 years, Fred and Kahylene Vanzant officially opened the farm nearly 75 years ago. The farm started out by growing peaches, apples, and grapes.

Today, their farming venture has expanded multi-generationally with Fred's son Stephen as the new owner.

"Family involvement ensures great service and even greater quality for our customers," their website says.

Vanzant's farm-to-table market sells fresh fruit, produce, jams, jellies, honey, and other local vegetables, tomatoes, watermelons, and cantaloupes.

Now that the growing season is over, it's time to indulge in the last batch that Vanzant Farms has to offer.

Vanzant offers the rare Arkansas Black apple, which is unique to the area. This type of apple was developed in the late 1800s in Benton County.

Not only can you buy the Vanzant's fresh produce, but they also offer family recipes from "Mabel's Table" on their website. Mabel is Stephen's grandmother, and the Vanzant's generously share her famous recipes for peach upside down cake and peach crisps.
