Adopted dog travels in limo to new home after spending 587 days at shelter

Euclid Animal Shelter staff and volunteers gathered for a "clap out" as their longest resident left for the start of his brand new life.

EUCLID, Ohio — You've heard the expression: "Every dog has its day." At the Euclid Animal Shelter, Monday was Chester's day!

After spending 587 days awaiting adoption, Chester has "left the building" after a very fond farewell from staff and volunteers he lined his walk to an awaiting limousine, courtesy of Lake Erie Limo.

The stretch vehicle took Chester and Shelter Director Kyrie Brickman to his new home in North Royalton.

Chester's story dates back to August 10, 2022 when he and 3 other dogs were found inside an abandoned home.

While the other dogs were loose in the house, Chester was chained in such a way that he couldn't lie down and with no access to food or water.  Of the four dogs, he was in the most medically fragile and in fact Brickman believes he wouldn't have survived much longer.  He also tested positive for heartworm, which requires a difficult and lengthy recovery.

This is how Euclid's Animal Control Officer found Chester, chained in an abandoned home with no access to food or water.

Shelter staff and volunteers spent months nursing him back to health - physically and emotionally too.

Ready Pet GO! featured Chester as part of our story on the Stand Up For Pits Hope Campaign. Stand Up For Pits is a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to saving lives and ending the abuse and discrimination of Pit Bull “type” dogs.

The Hope Campaign brought together photographers from around the country, including Greg Murray here in northeast Ohio, with the goal of photographing dogs who were lingering in shelters and in need of homes.  The goal was a social media blitz to raise awareness about these adoptable dogs in need of homes. Chester was one of the dogs featured.

We're going to feature Chester's full story on Ready Pet GO! Wednesday March 27th on 3News at 4.

We did spend some time with Chester's new mom today. In addition to lots of toys, stuffed animals and a very nice dog bed, Chester is getting a very special dinner for his first night -- homemade meatballs!
