Newton's Jewelers closing after 109 years in Fort Smith

The Newtons say they have felt incredibly honored to serve their community and feel blessed to be supported in return.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — After 109 years, the Newton family will soon close the doors of Newton’s Jewelers in downtown Fort Smith.

The business was founded by George H. Newton in 1914 and quickly established a reputation as a place where people could go for fine jewelry and service. It was followed by Bill Newton and continues today with Kelly Newton.

Throughout the years, the store’s standing within the community of Fort Smith blossomed. According to the store, as Newton's evolved, the reach of the business expanded until Newton’s Jewelers had customers in more than 40 states.

"109 years old, you know, but there's no good time to quit. But you know, you just can't go forever," Kelly Newton said.

The Newtons say they feel incredibly honored to serve their community and feel blessed to be supported in return, "My dad was determined to stick with it. And he said I'm not giving up on the city. And he didn't. And the city didn't give up. They kept coming."

When reflecting on the store’s history, Kelly Newton said, “The number one thing is that we’ve always worked our hardest to make sure our customers and community know how much we truly appreciate them. We’ve been so wonderfully blessed –by our customers, and by our community– it’s difficult to even express how much they really mean to us. We’ve served multiple generations of families and gotten to know them well. Many of them have become our friends and we deeply cherish that.”

Newton's Jewelers will have a closing sale beginning Thursday, April 6 at 10:00 a.m.

The inventory will include millions of dollars in collections of stunning diamond jewelry, engagement rings, precious gemstones, birthstone jewelry, and much more.

“We’re opening the vaults and offering unique pieces even our loyal customers have never seen. I want everything sold quickly, so we are putting our best discounts out there,” Kelly Newton said.
