Arkansas man gets 30 years for injuring Lowell police officer

Henington's vehicle "exited at a high rate of speed and struck the officer in a T-bone type collision, hitting the officer's vehicle in the driver door," LPD said.

LOWELL, Ark. — An Arkansas man has pleaded guilty and been sentenced to 30 years in prison for striking a Lowell police officer with his car.

Jerry Henington, 38, of Huntsville, pleaded guilty to battery, fleeing, unauthorized use of property to facilitate a crime, criminal mischief, resisting arrest, leaving the scene of an injury accident, second-degree criminal mischief, and leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

Additionally, he was charged as a habitual offender.

Lowell police were dispatched to Dixieland and W. Monroe on June 14, 2023, in response to a hit and run. The suspected vehicle was found by police and began to flee, according to a release from the Lowell Police Department (LPD).

"There was a clear danger to the public requiring officers to act," the release said.

As an officer began to approach the exit of the neighborhood the suspects were in, the suspect vehicle "exited at a high rate of speed and struck the officer in a T-bone type collision, hitting the officer's vehicle in the driver door."

The officer sustained injuries from the accident, LPD said.

Henington and his co-defendant, 18-year-old Tye Sutton, were taken into custody.

Sutton pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance and was sentenced to six years of probation in November 2023.
