Man accused of shooting Craighead Co. deputy faces two counts of capital murder

A man accused of shooting a Craighead County deputy, and firing shots at the Caraway police chief, now faces two counts of capital murder.

CRAIGHEAD COUNTY, Ark. — According to Prosecuting Attorney Scott Ellington, a man accused of shooting a Craighead County deputy, and firing shots at the Caraway police chief, now faces two counts of capital murder.

Eugene Collins has been in the Craighead County jail on a $5 million bond since January, when police said he threatened to kill seven people inside a home near Caraway.

Police confronted him when his truck got stuck in a field, and said he pulled out a 12-gauge shotgun and started shooting at them.

Police say pellets struck Craighead County Deputy Logan Dotson in the head, and hit Caraway Police Chief Shannon Kelems' patrol car.

Collins surrendered after a two-hour standoff.

He will be arraigned in the Eastern District of Craighead County Circuit Court in Lake City on Feb. 19.
