LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas — It's the time of giving and right now some Arkansans are needing more than usual as inflation and hardships are at a high.

On Friday night, the Martin Luther King Junior Commission wanted to ease the burden by serving hundreds of families in need.

They honored Martin Luther King Jr. by answering a question he asked all his life: What are we doing for others?

The organization hosted the third annual Ninth Street Christmas Food and Toy Giveaway and distributed more than 20,000 pounds of food. People lined up down the street to receive the packaged items from their car.

"For people who can't afford food a whole lot," One woman said while waiting in line. "I'm one of them."

Santa and Mrs. Claus also made an appearance. They took pictures with the kids and handed out toys.

"We're looking to pay it forward and to assist in any kind of way to make sure others have food during this time," Director of the MLK Commission Dushun Scarbrough said. "During this food insecurity not only that but making sure individuals who don't have a Christmas."

Partners of the event, included Power 92, The Praise Network, KOKY 102.1, Toys for Tots, Tyson Foods, and the Arkansas Food Bank.
