Arkansas State Police investigates 'suspicious' death of inmate

Arkansas State Police says a 25-year-old inmate was found unresponsive in his cell around 6:07 Friday morning. An investigation is underway.

LEE COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — Arkansas State Police is investigating a suspicious death of an at the East Arkansas Regional Unit in Lee County.

The investigation comes as authorities found 25-year-old Tevis Maxwell "unresponsive in his cell" around 6:07 a.m. on Friday.

According to police, lifesaving measures were initiated but were unsuccessful.

ASP believes Maxwell "might have been strangled" as he was being housed with another inmate in a two-person cell.

His cellmate is being questioned about Maxwell's death.

Arkansas State Police said Maxwell was serving a 25-year sentence for rape, commercial burglary, second-degree battery, aggravated assault on a correctional employee and two counts of robbery. 

He was sentenced on March 15, 2019, in Hempstead County. The Department of Corrections is conducting an internal investigation into Maxwell’s death.
