'Life of the Party' brings the mirth but isn't memorable

The latest Melissa McCarthy vehicle is funny but not memorable.

It's Mother's Day weekend and here's a couple of new films to watch with Mom. One of them a comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and the other a suspense actioner starring Gabrielle Union.

Melissa McCarthy stars in Life of the Party as Denna whose husband, minutes after dropping off their daughter for her senior year of college, announce he wants a divorce. Deanna decides to go back to college to finish her degree. She goes to the same college as her daughter, hangs out with all her daughter’s friends, parties with frat boys, and has the full “college experience”. At first, an oddball she jumps in headfirst and with the help of her new-found friends wins everyone over.

Good for her for going back to college but she does things that no mother in her right mind would do and no daughter in college would want to hang out with her mom on this level, somehow it works in this movie. It’s not a hilarious romp, but McCarthy is her usual charming, funny self.

This would be a fun movie to go see with your mom if you’re grown or recently out of college. I just don’t have much to say about this movie. It was funny but in a forgettable way.

...and in Breaking In, Gabrielle Union stars as a woman who will stop at nothing to rescue her two children being held hostage in a house designed with impenetrable security. No trap, no trick and especially no man inside can match a mother with a mission when she is determined on 'Breaking In.'
