The Blue Umbrella holds handmade art sale to celebrate 5th anniversary

The Arkansas Department of Human Services celebrated the 5th anniversary of The Blue Umbrella on Friday. Here's what to know.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Friday was a day of celebration as The Arkansas Department of Human Services (DHS) celebrated the 5th anniversary of The Blue Umbrella.

The celebration began at 10 a.m. at DHS's office along Main Street in Little Rock. The group celebrated The Blue Umbrella, which is an extension of DHS.

The Blue Umbrella, as described by DHS, is "a unique gift shop that embraces inclusion for all." That mission is a mantra that the group aimed to acknowledge as they celebrated on Friday — holding a bid on handmade art that was created specifically for the 5th anniversary.

Each piece inside of The Blue Umbrella store was "one-of-a-kind" and handmade by Arkansans with developmental and intellectual disabilities, according to DHS.

"Our mission is to celebrate these individuals who want to work and contribute to their communities while providing them a sense of pride and source of income," The Blue Umbrella said.
