Sen. Cotton says Trump is 'gonna tweet what he's gonna tweet'

When asked if the Trump's tweets were racist, Sen. Cotton didn't directly respond, saying, "the president is gonna tweet what he's gonna tweet."

Senator Tom Cotton didn't directly respond when he was asked at an event on Tuesday whether President Trump's tweets were racist for criticizing congresswomen of color.

"I think what he sees is a lot of extremism from the House Democrats," Cotton said at an Axios event. "The president is gonna tweet what he's gonna tweet."

Cotton also claimed at the event that "House Democrats have engaged in some truly outrageous statements that are anti-American, anti-Semitic, anti-police."

Since Trump tweeted that the congresswomen "go back to the crime infested countries they came from," many Democrats spoke out, stating that it was a direct attack on the women based on their race.

Initially, Republicans were silent on the matter. Since about a day after the president's tweets, a handful have condemned his attack.

Former presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, called the president's comments, "destructive, demeaning, and disunifying."

On Tuesday, the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives passed a resolution condemning President Donald Trump for the tweets. The vote passed with the support of four Republicans and independent Representative Justin Amash (I-Michigan).
