Arkansas businesses make adjustments for total solar eclipse

The excitement is building as the total solar eclipse is only a few days away, and many businesses in Arkansas are cashing in on the hype.

SHERWOOD, Ark. — The countdown to the April 8 total solar eclipse is on, and some Arkansas businesses are selling commemorative items.

"It's almost a holiday around here for sure," Julie's Sweet Shoppe employee Caitlyn Dejarnette said.

Throughout the week, Dejarnette has noticed eclipse cookie orders picking up at Julie's Sweet Shoppe in Conway.

"By the end of the week, we'll do well over 200 dozen," Dejarnette said.

Which she said is about double what they usually make in a typical week.

"We've seen a large influx of people coming in just specifically for those things, or even people who come in just to look around for other things" Dejarnette said. "They're like, 'Oh, I need some of those for my party.'"

And it's more than just eclipse-themed cookies.

Julie's Sweet Shoppe also decorated petit fours, strawberries, cupcakes, cake pops and will have donuts for the weekend

"We're definitely all excited for it," Dejarnette said.

It's a similar story over at the Humble Crumb in Sherwood.

Humble Crumb Co-Owner Betsy Peters said they're selling t-shirts in addition to eclipse cookies.

"We started selling them two weeks ago and have had to reorder every day because people really want them," Peters said.

While they've stayed steady this week, Peters expects Saturday to be busy.

"People have been coming in and getting a dozen or two dozen eclipse cookies, so I don't know if they're giving them to their coworkers or what," Peters said. "People seem to be preparing for it."

People from out of town are already joining in on the fun.

"I've had plenty of customers who are here actually home base from Arkansas, but they've had a lot of their family coming in," Dejarnette said. "One of them was from Montana and Wyoming, although the people were from California. One was from Nevada. They're all coming in just to come to the family's places and watch it all."
