Increased concerns for vehicle collisions along I-430 bridge

Kime Eubanks' family has had two car accidents along I-430 near the bridge just months apart. The most recent one, his daughter's car ended up on the median.

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas — For more than a year, those orange barrels around the I-430 bridge have served as a constant reminder of the lane shifts and construction work.

But even with all that time to get used to the new traffic pattern, it's still causing some trouble for drivers... some blaming it on accidents.

Kime Eubanks' family has had two car accidents along I-430 near the bridge just months apart. The most recent one, his daughter's car ended up on the median.

"It was very scary. She called me, and it was 7:45 in the morning. She was on her way to work," said Eubanks.

Eubanks tells me she was in the one-car lane at a standstill when she was hit from behind.

"There was no getting to her. I just had to wait until the police could get her out of there," said Eubanks.

Thankfully in both incidents, no one was injured, but it's a problem we've heard since the construction began... if someone isn't paying attention to the signs and lane shifts, there could be accidents.

"As with any work zone and construction zone, safety first. Slow down. Watch the signs," said Dave Parker with the Arkansas Department of Transportation.

The construction will continue until the middle of next year with more lane shifts expected as they widen the bridge to 8 lanes.

The extra lane in each direction is expected to cost $14 million dollars and they will only be open during heavy traffic.

You can go to ARDOT's website to see the lane changes as construction on the interstate continues.

Arkansas State Police said there have been 201 crashes in that area since January 1, 2021.

No injuries were reported in 192 crashes while only one fatality has happened.
