12-year-old drowns in Lake Ouachita, police say

The Garland County Sheriff's Office responded to a drowning that happened in Lake Ouachita on Sunday morning.

GARLAND COUNTY, Ark. — Police are investigating after a 12-year-old boy reportedly drowned early Sunday morning while swimming in Lake Ouachita near the Brady Mountain campground.

According to reports from The Sentinel-Record, the Garland County Sheriff's Office got a call about a missing 12-year-old who was last seen in the water.

The caller, identified as the juvenile’s father, stated that they were in town from Oklahoma and were camping in the recreation area when his son went into the lake to check on a jug they had been using for Jug Fishing.

Shortly later, the caller went to the water line to check on his son and was unable to find him.

Multiple emergency agencies were notified and responded to the scene to search the lake.

At 9:54 a.m., divers located an unresponsive male in 10-12 ft of water approximately 30-40 feet from the shoreline that fit the description of the caller’s son.

Shortly after the body was recovered, the Garland County Coroner's Office was also called to the scene.

The coroner pronounced the juvenile deceased at the scene and the body was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for an autopsy.
