Little Rock to create food commission to help fight food insecurity

Little Rock officials approved a food commission to address the city's food deserts. Now, they're asking for the public's help. Here's what to know.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Last year, a food desert task force was created to find solutions to Little Rock's food insecurity issues.

They met one year ago. Now, one of their proposed solutions is becoming a reality.

"It will address food insecurity in Little Rock by collaborating with nonprofits, getting citizens more engaged and hopefully following up on the recommendations that the food desert task force presented," Little Rock Vice Mayor Kathy Webb said.

Webb sponsored the ordinance for the food commission.

The goal is to get economic development in areas that need grocery stores or fresh food and more resources for people, like community gardens and access to SNAP benefits.

Now, the city is calling on the public for help.

The commission will have seven members. One will be a Little Rock director, but the others will be from the community with expertise in food retail, knowledge in agriculture, employment with volunteers with hunger relief programs and three at-large positions.

"We hope to engage a wide variety of citizens in the issue and really work on it," Webb said.
