Little Rock police investigating homicide involving Family Dollar employee

The Little Rock Police Department is currently investigating the scene of a reported homicide that took place at the Family Dollar on MLK Drive.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — On Wednesday, April 29, at 5:35 p.m., Little Rock police officers responded to a shooting at the Family Dollar on Dr. Martin Luther King Drive. 

Information was provided during the call for service that a male subject was lying on the ground and a woman shot him. When officers arrived on scene they located 45-year-old Keith Cobbins suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his chest. 

Officers requested medical attention for Cobbins, and MEMS transported him to UAMS where he later died due to his injury. 

While at the scene, officers learned that the person who shot Cobbins was and employee of the Family Dollar Store, later identified as 42-year-old Shalonda Nelson. 

Officers took Nelson into custody and transported her to the Major Crimes Division to speak with detectives.

Homicide Detectives responded to the scene and began interviewing those who were at the business when the shooting took place. Detectives began working with management at the business to try to obtain any available video surveillance. 

The Crime Scene Search unit responded to photograph and process the scene for any potential evidence. After interviewing all of the witnesses to the incident, detectives learned a disturbance ensued inside the business between Nelson and Cobbins. 

The disturbance escalated and continued out of the store and into the parking lot. During the disturbance, Nelson shot Cobbins in the chest.

Upon preliminary investigation and after interviewing Nelson, she was released from custody pending further investigation into this incident and a file review by the Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Cobbins’ body was transported to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for an autopsy.

Update: No criminal charges were filed by the Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
